Maybe yes, maybe no … it all depends on your dental insurance plan. Some companies…
Everyone knows that braces are the most effective way to realign your teeth and get that perfect smile you’ve always wanted. But there are still some crazy myths or beliefs that people have about braces. So it’s time to set the record straight (along with your teeth!).
10 Myths About Braces – From The Obvious To The Crazy
Myth 1: My braces will set off the metal detector at the airport.
They’re braces, not a gun. The lightweight metal used in braces won’t make airport security go wild (flashing your beautiful smile may get the attention of security officials, but it certainly won’t set off any alarms.)
Myth 2: Braces will increase my chances of being struck by lightning.
Braces are not lightning rods. People who wear braces have a 1 in 700,000 chance of being struck by lightning – the same odds as people who DON’T wear braces.
Myth 3: Braces will hurt all the time.
Your teeth with braces, may feel a little sore at first, but after a few days they won’t bother you. They may feel uncomfortable when you get them tightened, but once again that goes away pretty quickly.
Myth 4: If two people with braces kiss, they will get stuck together.
Funny scenario – and it would make a good scene in a comedy movie – but it’s not true. The brackets and wires that are used in today’s braces are so small that it’s almost impossible for them to get locked together.
Myth 5: My braces will pick up Wi-Fi or link to the Internet to download songs onto an iPod.
Unfortunately, not yet … but imagine how much money you could save if you could get free Wi-Fi or downloads every time you opened your mouth!
Myth 6: I can’t play sports if I have braces.
Playing sports is fine, you just need to wear a mouth guard to keep your teeth from getting hurt, especially in contact sports. With or without braces, mouth guards are important to save teeth and protect against jaw fractures. If you want to know more about which mouth guard you should purchase to protect your teeth properly read our blog post about sport & athletic mouth guards.
Myth 7: If I have braces, I can’t play a musical instrument.
It may feel a little strange at first, but you’ll be able to play … that’s if you could play an instrument in the first place. If not, having braces won’t stop you from learning to play.
MYTH 8: Braces are for kids.
One in five orthodontic patients is an adult. You’re never too old to straighten your teeth.
MYTH 9: braces CAN rust.
Today’s braces are made of new stronger materials, like titanium alloy, and will not rust.
MYTH 10: I can’t smile because everyone will notice my braces.
Today’s braces are nearly invisible, especially if you get Invisalign® invisible braces. So go ahead and flash a big smile.
