Will My Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Braces?June 12, 2013
Maybe yes, maybe no … it all depends on your dental insurance plan. Some companies offer very generous plans that cover a certain percentage of orthodontic care (50% or more of the costs may be covered). Other plans set a fixed dollar amount per year for dental care coverage that may include braces. Generally, company dental insurance plans only cover braces for children under 18.
Typically, an insurance policy that covers traditional braces also covers Invisalign™ invisible braces to the same extent.

8 ways to save money if your dental costs are not covered
Many company plans however don’t provide orthodontic coverage. If that’s the case, you have several options to make braces more affordable.
1. Straighten now, pay later
Dawson Dental offers 0% financing on approved credit. So you can spread the expense out over one or two years and make low monthly payments that fit your budget. Visit one of our offices today to apply. It only takes a few minutes and there are no commitments.

2. 5% cash discount
If you’re able to pay for the entire cost of your treatment upfront, you can take advantage of a 5% cash discount from Dawson Dental for Invisalign™ braces (with the exception of the Level 1 and 2 [Express] Invisalign treatments).
3. Get your own dental insurance
If you anticipate that you or your children will need braces and you’re not covered, you can start searching for a dental insurance plan that will help offset your dental costs. Contact insurance companies and find out what they’ll charge you for orthodontic coverage. Be sure to look into the cost of the premiums and deductibles, and if there are any exclusions.
4. Purchase a Dental Discount Plan
Some dental centres offer dental discount plans that let you pay a monthly or annual fee and you can be treated by dentists and orthodontists who participate in the plan. Just ask your dentist if he or she offers a discount plan for orthodontics to determine how much you could potentially save. Some plans won’t cover the cost of braces if treatment has already been started. So you’ll need to join the dental plan ahead of time. Be sure to look at the costs and make sure that you’re not going to be paying more in fees than for the treatment itself.
5. Go back to school (dental school that is)
If there is a dental school in your area, you can ask if they have orthodontists in training who will do braces for a discounted fee. The students are supervised by experienced orthodontists so there isn’t much to worry about.
6. Student Discount Program
Dawson Dental Centres are part of a program that provides discounts for college and university students from participating schools. When our discount is combined with the insurance coverage provided by the school, students can enjoy up to a 30% discount on preventative care.

7. Get braces from the government
If you have a low income, you could apply for the Canada Child Tax Benefit and use it to pay for your child’s braces. The benefit provides non-taxable monthly payments to help eligible families with children under the age of 18.

8. Get up to 20% back on your taxes
Come tax time, be sure to take advantage of the medical expense tax credit that you can claim on your income tax. Orthodontic expenses are covered by this credit that could return 20% on your dental costs. You can also claim the portion of eligible expenses that you and your spouse or common-law partner paid for a dependent.
