Dental Implants 101: Learn What Dental Implants Are and Your Dental Implant Options

Missing teeth?
Why you should get dental implants.

If you’re missing teeth, dental implants may be just what you’re looking for. Dental implants are a permanent way to help you get your smile back, along with your confidence. Replacing a missing tooth is also important for avoiding bone loss and maintaining good oral health. The best part is that dental implants look just like your own natural teeth, so no one will know they’re implants (unless you tell them!)

A new root for a new tooth

A tooth needs a root to hold it in place, and that’s precisely what a dental implant does. A dental implant is an artificial replacement for the root part of your tooth. Made of titanium metal, the implant is a small, cylinder-shaped post. This post is inserted into your jawbone and a replacement tooth gets attached to it. The post acts like an anchor for the new tooth holding it securely in place. Where once there was a hole, you now have a root and a new tooth.

Dental implants are just like real teeth

Dental implants are comfortable and look like real teeth. You can chew and eat like normal. You keep your dental implants clean using a toothbrush and floss, just like you would your natural teeth. With proper care, dental implants will last a lifetime. If you get your implants done at Dawson Dental, we will guarantee them for a full five years, as long as you maintain proper dental hygiene and come for annual checkups

Our five favourite things about dental implants

  1. They look and feel like your own teeth.
  2. They’re a comfortable, no-fuss choice.
  3. You can eat your favourite foods and chew without fear. Dental implants are securely rooted in your mouth and function just like natural teeth.
  4. You never have to worry about lisping or slurring your words, which sometimes happens with dentures.
  5. They’re an affordable, permanent solution that can last a lifetime.

Mini Dental Implants are better for some people

Another option for replacing missing or damaged teeth is Mini Dental Implants. Mini Dental Implants cost less than traditional Implants, but they are not permanent. They will generally last from 5-10 years. Also, they are not as secure as traditional Implants. However, Mini Dental Implants are still a far better choice than no Implants. They will help avoid bone loss and will still feel like real teeth.

The “Mini Implant System” was developed to provide greater denture stability for patients who can’t withstand the rigors of conventional implant surgery or don’t have enough bone to allow for full-sized implants to be placed. They can only be used to secure dentures, and are not recommended for individual teeth or bridges.

You will receive four dental implants and a full set of new replacement teeth, per arch. Traditional dental implants require six, eight or even more implants per arch and patients often need bone grafting, which could require six months or more of healing time. The procedure saves you time and money, all with minimal discomfort. During a free consultation with one of our dentists you can learn whether or not you are a candidate. Learn More.
