We sat down with Guelph Dentist to ask him a few questions about how he translates…
We sat down with Aurora / Newmarket dentist Dr. Jo-Anne Meyer to ask her a few questions about how she translates her love for dentistry into an exceptional patient experience. Dr. Meyer has been practicing with Dr. Gelfand since 2001 and is now a full partner and practicing dentist at Dawson Dental Centre Aurora and Newmarket Davis Drive locations.
Q: What makes a great smile?
A: A great smile is one that is broad and natural looking. When I say broad, I mean that you can see most, or at least some of the posterior teeth when the individual smiles. Julia Roberts is a great example of someone with such a smile.
Q: If money and time were no object, what dental treatment would you give everyone?
A: Invisalign! Invisalign! Invisalign! Most people I’ve come across could benefit from Invisalign to some degree, whether it be to resolve cosmetic or functional issues (or both) and unlike traditional braces, they are barely noticeable.
Q: We know dentists are known for inflicting, but what’s the greatest joy about being a dentist?
A: Just being able to contribute to the overall health and well being of a person, is very rewarding. Also, improving someone’s smile, however small or involved the procedure is, gives me immense pride and pleasure.
Q: What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened when you had someone in the chair?
A: I once had a kid sneeze unexpectedly and ended up with a whole lot of, shall we say, nose debris, on my face. The kid saw the funny side of things, so I laughed along…after I cleaned up 🙂
Q: If you had to name the single most important quality of a good dentist, what would it be?
A: TRUST. Having patients trust you and your judgement is powerful. A good dentist would never abuse that trust.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice for someone who has a fear of going to the dentist?
A: Most adults will talk about a bad experience at the dentist as a child, or of a procedure done 20 years ago, which left them scarred and afraid. Some will talk about their “hate” of needles and the “sound of the drill”. I tell patients, “No matter how bad your fear is, we can treat you”. By educating the patient about the advances in dentistry and the different sedation options will often put a fearful person at ease.
Q: What’s the biggest myth about dentists?
A: That we inflict pain!
Q: What would you say is the single best way people can save on dental costs?
A: It’s common sense really. Have regular check-ups. Early detection is key. A small problem is much easier and far less costly to fix than a big problem.
Q: How should people go about trying to find the best dentist?
A: Ask your family and friends. You’ll trust their judgment more than that of any stranger or advertisement.
Q: What’s the single best thing you love about living & working in York Region?
A: Both Newmarket and Aurora are wonderful communities to live and raise a family in. Living and working in the area means I am part of the community in every way. Seeing my patients around town outside of the office allows us to see each other in a different setting, as regular people, doing regular things.
Q: If you were to pick the one thing that always make you smile, what would it be?
A: Well that’s an easy one…my 2 kids! Just the thought of them brings a huge smile to my face.
