Why does your dentist suggest you wear retainers after braces treatment?
Retainer wear helps prevent relapse. The tooth is held inside a socket of the bone. There are delicate ligaments that hold the teeth into their proper position. Those ligaments allow movement. Braces achieve their desired effect by pulling or pushing the teeth in a planned way. Since the ligaments have memory, if you let them go, they will have a tendency to go back to their original position. On the other hand, if you hold them in the new position long enough, they will lose the memory.
How long should you wear a retainer after braces treatment?
In the first month after the braces are removed, the risk of relapse is very high. Your teeth can take up to one year or more to stabilize after treatment. If you had gaps between your teeth before treatment, the retention period will be longer.
Your Invisalign or Orthodontics provider will prescribe the retention plan that is best for you. Often, retainers are used full-time for the first 3-6 months. After 6 months, retainers are worn only at night, for a couple of years. Lingual retainers are cemented on for 20+ years.
What will my retainers look like?
Dawson offers clear retainers, which are virtually invisible. Lingual wires are also available.
I wasn’t expecting the additional cost of retainers, are they really necessary?
Retainers, which every type you choose are always encouraged at the end of your Invisalign or traditional orthodontic braces treatment. If your benefits covered your treatment, they will more than likely cover your retainer cost. If you don’t have benefits, that’s okay, we will suggest the best option for you based on your budget.
At Dawson, we encourage the use of retainers because we want to ensure that the work we’ve done for you will not only aesthetically uphold, but also ensure long term optimal oral care. We’ve created a Retainers For Life Program at Dawson. So long as you maintain your regular hygiene care with us, we will replace your retainer at no charge for life.*
