Can Visiting Your Dentist For X-Rays Lead to Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid Cancer and Dental X-raysRecently, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. He stated that many dentists don’t bother to use it.

Current research shows that the prevalence of thyroid cancer in women has grown significantly since the 1970’s.   A common risk factor to developing thyroid cancer has been traced back to high levels of radiation in childhood, adolescence or even adulthood.  These high amounts of radiation were commonly received through treatments for acne, skin and fungus diseases of the face and scalp, tonsillitis, sore throats, chronic coughs and excess facial hair1.  These types of radiation therapy are no longer performed, as the consequences are too great.

The good news is that research has not been able to draw a link between dental x-rays and thyroid cancer!

The amount of radiation that is emitted from a dental x-ray unit is so minimal that dentists and dental health professionals are not even required to cover their patients with lead aprons.  With that said, Dawson Dental Centres uses the highest quality lead aprons, which include thyroid collars in order to even further minimize any radiation exposure.

Rest assured, having regular examinations with your dentist will not put you at risk!
