Do I Need To Wear A Retainer After Invisalign?July 1, 2016
On the market for over 15 years, Invisalign is a popular alternative to traditional braces as it uses invisible braces to straighten teeth. In fact, the results you will get from Invisalign are just as good as the results from traditional braces. One major benefit of Invisalign over traditional braces is that the results can be achieved in as little as 3 to 6 months depending on the state of your teeth.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Instead of traditional braces and their immoveable brackets and wire, Invisalign uses aligners to straighten the teeth, which are clear and can be taken out to eat and brush your teeth. Every six weeks, patients will visit the dentist to receive a new set of aligners. These appointments do not take much longer than 20 minutes. In between appointments, you will change to a new set of aligners every two weeks until your desired results are achieved.
Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign?
The short answer to this is that yes, you need to wear a retainer after Invisalign. However, Dawson Dental offers clear retainers, meaning they are mostly invisible.
The reason for having to wear retainers is that even after your treatment is complete, your teeth will have the tendency to want to shift back to their original position (this is the case with traditional braces as well). This is because the ligaments that hold teeth in place have memory; if you hold them in their new place for a long enough time, they will forget this memory. This is why a retainer is needed – so that you can avoid your teeth from shifting back to their original position.
How Often Do I Have to Wear My Retainer?
At first, you will need to wear the retainer often. This is particularly true during the first month after you have stopped your treatment as relapse during this time is particularly high. You will most likely be recommended to wear your retainer on a full-time basis for three to six months. Some people may also end up with a cemented retainer – one that cannot be removed. It is also not noticeable to other people as it is generally cemented behind the bottom set of teeth.
Over time, however, you will eventually only have to wear your retainer at night. After six months, they are generally worn at night. Keep in mind that our team of professionals at Dental Dawson recommends that you wear your retainer at night for the rest of your life.
Not only are braces beneficial in getting that smile you’ve always dreamed of, but Invisalign will also help you to maintain your oral health as those with straighter teeth have an easier time maintaining their oral hygiene.
