How to Alleviate Your Fear of the Dentist
When it comes to seeing the dentist, 45% of patients claim to be severely scared of the dentist. 30% are moderately scared and 25% have mild anxiety.
We understand that visiting the dentist can be scary. The good news is that there are things you can do on your own to help relieve your fear and anxiety.
Five ways to alleviate your dental anxiety:
Ask questions your visit that cause you anxiety. If you know and understand what is going to happen, you may have less reason to worry.
Eat a light meal before you come into the office and try not to drink anything with caffeine as it will stimulate you instead of relaxing you. Eating a rich protein snack like a lean meat sandwich will help stabilize your blood sugar and reduce irritability.
Find a distraction in the dental chair. Listen to music or watch tv.
Establish a signal, such as raising your hand, to let us know you want us to stop. This will make you feel more in control.
If you use techniques outside of the office to relieve your stress, use them in the chair too. Try thinking of pleasant images, deep breathing or relaxing your muscles one by one.
