A white smile is important to many people, after all, your teeth are a reflection…
Is Teeth Whitening for You? The Truth Behind ZOOM! WhiteningNovember 29, 2013
With so many different teeth whitening products on the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when making the decision about how to whiten your smile. So here is the truth about professionally whitening your teeth with ZOOM! whitening.
How does professional ZOOM! teeth whitening work?
The Zoom! whitening procedure is an in-office, hour long technique that is best performed after a dental exam and teeth cleaning. Zoom! itself is a patented whitening gel that contains 25% hydrogen peroxide, which is activated by a specially-designed light and is proven to instantly brighten your teeth up to eight shades lighter. At Dawson Dental, patients can comfortably listen to music, watch TV or even fall asleep while the procedure is completed..
What causes our teeth to discolor in the first place?
There are many reasons for discolored teeth, such as regular consumption of dark coloured drinks (red wine, coffee, tea), foods (cranberries, blueberries, raspberries), medicine that contains minocycline, antibiotics and aging. Smoking also contributes greatly to teeth yellowing.
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Zoom! whitening?
Almost everyone is a candidate for ZOOM! whitening but there are some exceptions. Zoom! teeth whitening is ideal for patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth and healthy gums who are looking for a brighter smile. The Zoom! procedure does not whiten resin composite materials such as fillings and unfortunately, individuals with veeners, crowns, bonding or bridges are not good candidates. Buyer beware: Although there are many products on the market that claim to whiten teeth, no matter what the teeth are made of, the truth is, the ONLY material that can truly be whitened is the natural tooth enamel, by penetrating into the deeper levels of the enamel. On the other hand, any whitening that may be achieved on non-enamel surfaces is done through abrasion (not penetration of the material, resulting in true whitening). If you are considering whitening for your teeth, be careful about the false claims that some whitening gel or whitening strips’ manufacturers are making. When it comes to teeth whitening, you should only seek advice from a professional dentist.
Are there any side effects?
Sensitivity is the main side effect for any whitening procedure and tends to last approximately 24 hours. At Dawson Dental, we offer a variety of desensitizing varnishes to help our patients cope with any extra pain they may have. Tooth and gum sensitivity can also be overcome at home by using a toothpaste that contains a higher amount of fluoride before and after the Zoom! treatment.
How long does it take to see my results?
Dawson Dental Centre patients see the results as soon as you step out of the procedure room. You should expect to reach your maximum results about two weeks after your procedure.
