Whitening

So, you want to whiten your teeth. Maybe you know exactly what whitening product you want to use or maybe you are like most people and unsure as to what to try; over the counter vs. at the dentist, sensitivity, price and guaranteed results all need to be considered.

We understand it can be a tad overwhelming. Every product claims to whiten your teeth, but how much and how long will it last?

Over the counter whitening products such as whitening strips, trays, gels and even toothpastes do whiten, but the fact is only a dentist can provide the best results. The reason is because of the chemicals used in the whitening. Over the counter products have a limited amount that they can manufacture with. Don’t get us wrong, they most certainly do work, if you are consistent with them.

You may or may not be leaning towards whitening products at the dentist, but even if you do want to call to setup an appointment, you are still faced with a couple other whitening product choices, just to make it more confusing. You will be presented with two options: one hour whitening or take home whitening. We recommend that all whitening treatments be done after a recent dental hygiene cleaning. If you do not remove all of the plaque from your teeth prior to treatment, there may be blotchy spots.

One Hour Teeth Whitening

Zoom!® In-Office Whitening is safe, effective and very fast. In just one hour, your teeth will be dramatically whiter. In some cases you can see up to eight shades difference.

The Zoom! light-activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide gel is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching colored substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom! light aids in activating the Hydrogen Peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom! lamp increases the effectiveness of the Zoom! gel by 33% or more, giving an average improvement of eight shades.

Some patients find that this procedure causes a lot of sensitivity while others don’t note any. If sensitivity has been an issue for you in the past, you may want to consider the take-home option.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

A whitening gel is placed in a custom fitted tray that we have made especially for you. The tray is then placed over your teeth and worn for the prescribed time. As the whitening gel dissolves, oxygen enters the enamel and the dentin portion of your teeth. This process lightens stains on your enamel, and the results are usually seen within the first week.
The active whitening ingredient is carbamide peroxide, an ingredient that has been proven safe and effective in many clinical trials. We’ll prescribe the proper strength of gel for your particular whitening needs and insure that the treatment will be completely customized to your schedule.
