Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help?

Appointments

How often should I visit my dentist?

Brushing twice daily along with daily flossing is important to your oral health but visiting the dentist every six months is important because your dentist can check for problems that you may not see or feel. Often early stages of gum disease and cavities are not painful until they are in advanced stages and are most likely preventable and more treatable when diagnosed from regular checkups.

What precautions are Dawson Dental taking to keep patients safe?

At Dawson, our entire team is dedicated and well trained to ensure each of our offices provides a safe environment for our patients and team members. We have upgraded all of our protective personal protection equipment and sanitation centres to prevent passing germs throughout the office.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

In the event of an emergency, contact your Dawson Dental practice or after hours, call 1-855-337-2999. Emergency Care support is available 7 days a week from Monday to Friday 8 am-9 pm, Saturday 8 am-4 pm and Sunday 9 am-3 pm. Learn more about dental emergencies here. If you cannot move your jaw or feel discomfort when you close your mouth, you should go directly to the hospital emergency department as your jaw may be dislocated, fractured or broken.

Do dental sealants benefit children?

Dental sealants are a fast, safe and effective way of protecting your child’s teeth. A protective coating is applied on cavity-prone areas such as the chewing surfaces or the back teeth and acts as a barrier over deep grooves and pits, reducing the risk of decay.

Do I need to get my Wisdom teeth removed?

If the Wisdom teeth are healthy and have grown in straight they often don’t cause many issues however often the mouth is too small to accommodate wisdom teeth. Your Dentist, through exams and x-rays, will advise you on the status of your wisdom teeth to avoid any future complications. Your Dentist will monitor their growth from around the age of 15 however, if you experience one or more of the following symptoms, contact us immediately.

⦁ Swelling, pain or an abscess in your mouth
⦁ Pain or stiffness in your jaw close to where your wisdom teeth are located
⦁ Tight feeling along your jawline or your teeth
⦁ Teeth seem to be experiencing movement
⦁ Teeth are becoming crowded

Billing

Do you accept all insurance plans?

Dawson Dental accepts almost all of the major insurance plans. It is important for you to understand your insurance plan and what your plan covers. Once you are provided with your dental plan, it is important that your treatment decisions are based on your dental health requirements and not refuse treatment based on tor dental plan coverage.

Do you direct bill my insurance company?

We do! You’re busy, and sometimes just making it to your dentist appointment on time can be a challenge, let alone filling out insurance forms. Not to mention, paying for dental care upfront and having to wait weeks to be reimbursed by cheque is old-school – and a real drain on your finances!

Do you offer financing?

Dawson is committed to ensuring dental treatment is affordable for all their patients. We understand that dental work can be costly and we are pleased to offer flexible payment plans that cover a variety of treatments so nothing comes in the way of your oral health. What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin-shaped porcelain shells that are shaped to fit over the fronts of teeth to correct discoloration, chipped, cracked or crooked teeth. They are very durable and do not stain.

What is Invisalign?

As an alternative to metal braces, Invisalign uses clear, plastic aligners to correct your bite and shift them into the desired final position. Invisalign is removable therefore you are able to eat or drink whatever you like and brush and floss without any trouble. Each set of aligners are worn for approximately two weeks and then you are provided with a new set of aligners until your treatment is complete.

Do dental implants require special care?

Although dental implants cannot decay, the gum and supporting bone needs to be maintained to protect your oral health. Regular brushing, flossing, routine cleanings and check-ups are highly recommended to help keep oral bacteria in check to avoid compromising not only your natural teeth but also the implant.

I don’t get a restful sleep at night and have trouble staying asleep. Is there anything a Dentist can do to help?

In some cases, if you are experiencing symptoms such as drowsiness during the day, headaches, or snoring, you may have sleep apnea. When you sleep, your throat relaxes which allows structures to collapse against one another and obstruct airflow. At Dawson Dental we cater to your overall oral health and wellbeing. We invite you to book a free consultation to determine if you would be a candidate for a specially fitted oral dental appliance that holds the mouth and throat in an open position when you sleep.

I don’t like going to the Dentist. What can you do make me feel more comfortable?

Having a fear of the Dentist is actually quite common and normal. At Dawson we provide a calming environment and ensure that you understand what your appointment will entail every step of the way. It is important to let us know if you have any level of dental anxiety as Dawson Dental offers varying levels of sedation such as nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), oral and sedation, to general anesthesia to help provide you with the best possible dental care.
